Government commits to banning private clinic prescriptions

We are delighted the Health Secretary heeded our call to ban private clinics from prescribing puberty blockers to children. We are relieved that organisations such as GenderGP may no longer profit from vulnerable youth, many of whom are same-sex attracted.

Government should act on private clinic prescriptions

Today we have written to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Victoria Atkins MP, on the increasing urgency for the government to act to limit the ability of private clinics to prescribe puberty blockers to young people.

We previously wrote to the Secretary of State urging her to “close the loophole” back in March.

NHS announcement on cross-sex hormones

We are deeply disturbed by the NHS announcement that cross-sex hormones may be prescribed to children as young as fifteen. It recently announced it was halting the prescription of puberty blockers because of the poor evidence base, concluding that these drugs are neither safe nor effective. Exactly the same applies to cross-sex hormones, with the added point that these cause irreversible changes to the body within months. In the case of teenage girls – the majority – these changes include a deep voice and beard growth. There is an alarming lack of joined-up thinking here.

We have campaigned for years against the medicalisation of “gender non-conforming” teens.

Gay teens aren’t sick!

Close the loophole

As we have long campaigned against puberty blockers, we were delighted when the NHS announced that they would put evidence first and no longer prescribe them to children and young people.

Now young LGB people must be protected from unscrupulous private providers. We must win this battle too.

Today we have written to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care urging her to close the loophole that allows private sales of puberty blockers for kids.
