Worrying health news. An outbreak of Monkey pox which is effectively a less virulent cousin of smallpox. Introduced in early May from Nigeria where it’s endemic, people who have many sexual partners are at risk of catching it.
The UK government has warned that 4 bisexual or gay men have now caught the disease and urged “gay or bisexual men to be aware of any unusual rashes or lesions and to contact a sexual health device without delay.”
However, the Government statement refers to “men who self-identify as gay or bisexual”. We’ve no idea what this means. This is a perfect example of where the ambiguous language of identity gets in the way of clarity. Public health messages should communicate clearly and effectively.
