Our survey said…

We carried out a survey of our supporters in 2022 and 1,267 of you took part.  We learnt a huge amount, the main finding being that there’s no such thing as a typical LGB Alliance supporter.

It’s clear we come from all around the world, are all ages, we’re lesbian, gay, bi – with some welcome heterosexual support. However, there were some notable trends.

The first was obvious. We are considerably more lesbian, gay or bisexual than the rest of the population. We are 34% lesbian, 33% gay men, 12% bi and 20% straight. That matches almost exactly the proportions on our most recent Conference Exit Survey so we’re confident that it’s an accurate summation.

85% of our supporters who took part in our survey lived in the UK but we had responses from people in 32 countries including China, Russia and Ukraine.

Of those, UK based people, a whopping 46% live in London and the South East of England. We are sometimes accused of being too London-centric so that provided food for thought and led to an increased focus on Friends’ Groups to make sure likeminded people could gather all around the country.

Supporters are 89% white, slightly higher than the UK average of 87%.

Only 5% of our supporters describe themselves as right wing and a further 20% as centre-right. LGB Alliance is not party political and so it’s interesting to see that the majority of our supporters are left-leaning.

We asked you about relationships and 37% were married or in a Civil Partnership. A third of our supporters are single. Although the survey did not indicate whether they were ready to mingle.

The most unsurprising finding was that LGB Alliance supporters are extraordinarily clever. 40% have a postgraduate degree and 83% attended university. Less than half the UK population aged 25 to 64 has a degree.

Lastly we asked where LGB Alliance should be focusing our efforts. You overwhelmingly said on protecting young people, followed by freedom of speech and then community building.

Over the last two years we’re satisfied that we’ve made great strides with all three. We’ll be commissioning another survey soon and we’ll keep you posted on what we discover.
